Spiritual Practice@Home :: “Kiss the Ground”

Today, like every other day,
we wake up empty and frightened.
Don’t open the door to the study and begin reading.
Take down a musical instrument.
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

Jelaluddin Rumi – 13th century mystic

As spring finally, finally arrives, how can you celebrate this beautiful earth? Can you go for a walk? Sit and stare out the window for longer than you usually let yourself? What is your version of “take down a musical instrument”? How can you create something beautiful: singing, drawing, cooking, gardening, laughing?

“Do” beauty this weekend and this week. Let beauty pour into the empty and frightened parts of yourself and let it act as a healing balm. Truly there are hundreds of ways to do this. There are hundreds of ways to feel grateful for the ground we walk on, whether it’s the physical earth, or the ground of our being.

We are created in the image of a Creating God. Don’t just study, work, and think. Do, and make, and be. Celebrate. Play.

Kiss the beauty in this world.
